BRADFORD, Pennsylvania - Jan. 7, 2023 - The Hiram men's wrestling team returned to competition with a win and two losses in the AMCC Quad Match at the University of Pittsburgh - Bradford on Saturday.
The Terriers lost to Pitt-Bradford (32-19) and Alfred State (42-6) before beating Penn State Behrend (33-22) to wrap up their first event in nearly a month. The meet marked the only official AMCC competition in the first season of wrestling being a conference-sponsored sport.
Junior Alex Savering got the day rolling with a win by major decision (13-4) over Pitt-Bradford's Darren Christian Jr. in the 149-lb weight class. Sophomore Kaelon Lawson-West (157 lbs) followed with a win by decision (6-4, OT) against Raymond Worsen III. Senior Devan Welch (285 lbs) finished the dual by beating Cameron Carter-Green by fall (6:41).
The team moved over to the event's second mat for its second dual against Alfred State. Sophomore Jimmy Thomas (174 lbs) took center stage in the dual, winning against Johnny Layfield by decision (11-6). Welch continued his successful day with a win by decision (3-2) over Nicholas Barrett in the heavyweight class.
The final dual marked the team's second win against Penn State Behrend this season; it previously won, 35-14, on Dec. 10 in Jamestown, New York. Savering won by major decision against Hunter Savitz (21-9), junior Seth Holt (165 lbs) won by fall (4:43) against Zachary Edwards and Thomas won by technical fall (16-0) against Brian Himes.
Hiram returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Claude Sharer Duals; an event that will feature duals against Wilmington, Otterbein and Washington and Jefferson beginning at 11 a.m.
