Strong 2nd Quarter Not Enough In Hiram Loss To DePauw

Terriers Outscored Tigers 20-8 In 2nd Quarter

GREENCASTLE, Indiana - January 4, 2023 - Hiram battled its way back before falling to DePauw, 69-45, in the team's first NCAC game of the season.

The Terriers trailed 23-8 at the end of the first quarter before outscoring their opposition by 12 points in the second quarter. They held the Tigers to a 23.5% FG pct in the period while shooting 50% (8-16) on the offensive end of the floor.

The momentum would slow down in the second half, with DePauw finding its groove offensively against a Hiram defense that has played well throughout the campaign. Mya Shannon finished with a game-high 22 points.

For Hiram, Anastasia Lawler led the way with her 3rd double-digit scoring game of the campaign (14 points), while also contributing on the defensive end with a block and steal. Lizzy Scharer continued to be a force off the bench with 10 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.

The second quarter was highlighted by a balanced scoring effort; five different players found the scoring column in the 10 minutes of action. Lawler found the hot hand by scoring 8 of her 14 points in the quarter, all of which were scored consecutively to bring the score to 27-21 with 3:39 to play before halftime.

Maddie Rakestraw, Scharer and Ava Mory capped off the quarter to cut the deficit to just 3 points (31-28) at the intermission.

DePauw took control the rest of the way to put Hiram in an 0-1 hole to start the conference season. Shannon's 22 points marked a season-high.

Hiram will look to get back on track when it returns home against the Kenyon Owls on Saturday at 2 p.m. from Price Gymnasium.
