Hiram Earns 1st Conference Win Against Wooster

Terriers Improve Home Record to 4-2

HIRAM, Ohio - January 18, 2023 - Hiram earned its first conference victory of the season in a 53-45 win over Wooster on Wednesday at Price Gymnasium.

The well-balanced effort saw eight different players register in the scoring column, including Haley Thompson with a team-high 15 points off the bench. The Terriers outscored their opposition in points in the paint (30-18) and bench points (29-0) to help improve their home record to 4-2 on the season.

Hiram has played well on the defensive end throughout the season, now holding its opposition to fewer than 60 points in 6 different games (5-1 record). Brooke Hickman led the unit with 4 blocks and a steal, while Thompson added 4 steals of her own.

The Terriers took control from the start, with five different players scoring in the first quarter. Anastasia Lawler led the charge with 9 points – all on three-pointers – in a span of 3:17 of game time.

The defense did its part in the second quarter, holding the Fighting Scots to their fewest points (7) and lowest FG pct (13.3%, 2-15) in any quarter of the game. Thompson scored 6 points in the quarter to give the home team a 35-17 advantage heading into the intermission.

Wooster would hold strong and outscore the Terriers by 10 points in the second half, but Hickman, Thompson and Maddie Rakestraw would come through with timely shots to stay ahead in the critical moments. The team particularly played well in the paint, with each of its 8 made field goals in the second half coming in the painted area.

For Thompson, the 15-point performance marked her 3rd-most points in a game this season, trailing a pair of games with 20+ points in the JCU Tipoff Classic. The senior eclipsed 600 career points with her performance (now has 611 career points).

Hiram will next travel to Springfield, Ohio to take on Wittenberg on Saturday at 1 p.m.
