CLEVELAND, Ohio – January 14, 2023 – Hiram beat Wilmington College (50-5) and lost to Otterbein (48-3) and Washington and Jefferson (26-21) as part of the Claude Sharer Duals at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday morning.
The Terriers are now 3-7 in dual meets this season, with two of those three wins coming in the 2023 calendar year.
It was a dominating effort against Wilmington; Kaelon Lawson-West (157 lbs) won by technical fall over Garrett Simmons (19-1), Seth Holt (165 lbs) won by fall over Adrian Salamone (3:42), Jimmy Thomas (174 lbs) won by fall over Alexander Ruth (0:44) and Devan Welch (285 lbs) wrapped it up with a win by decision over Mahamadou Sissoko (7-3). Hiram won 9 of the 10 weight classes in the dual.
Welch continued his successful day with a win by decision over Zac Stray (3-2) to give the Terriers their lone points in the dual against Otterbein. Alex Savering (141 lbs) had a strong effort before losing by fall to Andrew Sas (5:23).
The dual against Washington and Jefferson came down to the wire, with the Terriers winning the 197-lb weight class (Zach Harper) and 285-lb weight class (Welch) to cut a 26-12 deficit to a final score of 26-21. In the early stages of the dual, Savering won by decision (9-7) and Lawson-West won by decision (10-6).
Hiram will take the week off before returning to competition on Jan. 29 at the Jamestown Community College Open beginning at 9 a.m.
