8/31/2021 2:23:00 PM

HIRAM, Ohio - August 31, 2021 Hiram College Director of Athletics Todd W. Hibbs announced on Tuesday that he will step down from his position as Director of Athletics, effective Friday, Sept. 30.

"Todd will leave Hiram Athletics with incredible momentum and a strong foundation for continued success. I want to thank Todd for his management and service to not just our athletics program, but the entire Hiram Community," Senior Vice President and Dean of Students, Liz Okuma said. "I particularly appreciate his steady and capable leadership during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He and his team were able to help mitigate those impacts and ensure that Hiram Athletics came through a challenging year, giving student-athletes a chance to compete, with multiple appearances at conference and national championships."

A native of Richmond, Ohio, Hibbs joined Hiram in May 2019 with more than 25 years of experience at the collegiate level, both as an administrator and a coach, having most recently served as an associate athletic director at Alma College in Alma, Mich.

And since his hiring, Hibbs has overseen the installation of new scoreboards at Charles A. Henry Field, Fishel Field at Proverbs Park and Price Gymnasium, soon to be unveiled this fall, as well as the addition of men's and women's wrestling as the Terriers' 17th and 18th varsity sports, re-establishing a men's wrestling program that competed for 33 years at Hiram from 1954 till 1987.

"I have been so fortunate to work at Hiram College with such selfless and committed colleagues during an unprecedented time in collegiate athletics," Hibbs said. "The coaches, athletic trainers, sports information and event management staff, in cooperation with our health center staff and cabinet, found a way in this pandemic to provide student-athletes with growth opportunities, safe competition, and even championship celebrations. I know that this tremendous staff will continue to build upon their recent successes, and I'm truly saddened that I won't be around to witness it firsthand."

Under Hibbs, the Hiram College Department of Athletics has also seen tremendous growth, with several new additions of both full-time, part-time and graduate assistant staff, as well as the establishment of Hiram's Ohio Chi chapter of the Chi Alpha Sigma national scholar-athlete society.

Scott Pohlman has been named Interim Director of Athletics. Pohlman will serve as interim director of athletics while continuing to serve in his role as head softball coach. Pohlman enters his sixth season with the department and the softball program in 2021-22, having joined the Terriers from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where he served as an assistant softball coach for seven seasons.

A nationwide search for a new Hiram College Director of Athletics will begin immediately.
