Michael Barber

Barber `19 enters his third season with the Terriers and his second as the Director of Aquatic Operations and Head Coach of the Hiram men's and women's swimming & diving programs in 2023-24. Following a season as an assistant coach, Barber was promoted to interim head coach on June 8, 2021 and Director of Aquatic Operations and permanent head coach on March 17, 2022.

Over the seasons with the Terriers, Barber has led the Terriers to tremendous success, including a 6-4 record in dual meets for the men's team (best since 2002-03) and 5-7 record for the women's team (best since 2012-13) this past season. The 2022-23 campaign also included numerous program records and notable victories over Wittenberg and Washington & Jefferson by each team.

Barber joined the Terriers from Guion Creek Middle School in Indianapolis, Ind., where he served as a swim coach for a year and a half. Under Barber's tenure, the Jaguars broke two school records and the girls' team won the Middle School Conference meet. 

Previously, Barber had also spent the last five years as a pool manager in Indianapolis, overseeing the maintenance of over 16 city pools, running swim lessons for 300+ children and heading up all of the park's swim teams.

A 2019 graduate of Hiram College, Barber was a four-year letter winner for the Terriers, helping the team earn USA Swimming Team Academic All-America status in 2018 and 2019. Additionally, Barber earned the Team GPA award in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and was named the Team MVP in 2017 and 2018.

Outside of the pool, Barber was a member of Hiram's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Exercise Science Club.

Barber earned his bachelor's degree in integrated exercise science from Hiram College in May 2019 and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies at Hiram College.
