Jan.19-BETHANY, W.Va.- The Hiram College swimming & diving team collected their first victory of the season against Bethany (167-109), Friday night. This victory not only marked the first win of the season for the team but also the first-career win for Austin Veltman as a head coach.
Hiram's win was accomplished with a collective effort. The women's 200-yard medley relay opened up the day, scoring 11 points for the Terriers with a first place victory. The relay featured Freshman Nicki Prentler, sophomore Jill Schmidt, junior Sierra Daniels, and freshman Kerrie Romagna.
In the next event, Sophmore Jenna Nelson collected another Hiram win in the 1650-yard freestyle, clocking in at 20:08.87.
Freshman Mallory Best notched two more events for the Terriers winning the 200 (2:23.78), and 50-yard freestyle (28.94).
Hiram won two last women's events with Daniels adding nine points in the 100-yard butterfly (1:13.87), and Romagna locking down a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (1:08.37).
Freshman Brady Gunther kicked off the men's side finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.08. Gunther came back later that night and captured another win in the 100-yard backstroke (58.74).
Senior Jory Gomes followed his lead claiming the top spot in the 200-yard IM (2:19.28), and the 100-yard freestyle (1:02.19).
Junior Reeve Bowling swept the 100-yard butterfly 58.42 and breaststroke 1:06.87, and made a runner-up appearance in the 50-yard freestyle (22.9), adding 22 points for the Terriers.
Junior Michael Barber dominated the 500-yard freestyle, coming in over seven minutes faster than his competition (5:38.04).
The Terriers hit the pool again Saturday, Jan.20 as the women take on Franciscan and Washington and Jefferson in a tri-meet, and the men take on Washington and Jefferson in a dual meet. The meet is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
