UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Seniors Emily Syrjala (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) and Ashley Myer (Parma, Ohio/ Parma) both scored their first goals of the season, but the Hiram College women's soccer team was defeated by John Carroll by a 3-2 score on Thursday evening.
The Terriers drop to a 1-3-1 record on the season, while the Blue Streaks improve to 2-3-1.
John Carroll jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute, when Katie O'Donnell scored her first goal of the season. It seemed like the score would remain 1-0 going into halftime, but senior Katelyn Mauch (Parma, Ohio/ Normandy) found senior Emily Syrjala, who fired a shot off the cross to tie the match at one going into halftime.
Hiram's momentum continued into the second half. Senior Ashley Myer (Parma, Ohio/ Parma) wasted no time and found the back of the net within the first minute of the half.
But JCU's Andrea Regrut then decided to take matters into her own hands. About six minutes after Myer's goal, Regrut scored off of a free kick. Regrut scored again twenty-one minutes later for her second goal of the night to secure a 3-2 win for the Blue Streaks.
The Blue Streaks held a 26-10 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
In goal, freshman Ally Green (Stow, Ohio/ Stow-Munroe Falls) played for most of the match and finished with nine saves. Junior Alina Mille (Medina, Ohio/ Medina) made a brief appearance in the second half and recorded no saves.
Hiram will be in action next on Tuesday, when they head home to face Bethany (W.Va.) at 7:30 p.m.
