Wright's 27 Leads Hiram Women's Basketball Past Defiance, 77-62

HIRAM, Ohio - December 16, 2019 – Junior TT Wright scored a game-high 27 points, as Hiram College women's basketball picked up a 77-62, bounce-back victory over the Defiance Yellow Jackets on Monday at Price Gymnasium. 

The Yellow Jackets won the opening tip-off and opened an early 4-0 lead. 

Defiance attacked the paint early versus the Terriers tallying 10 points in the paint in the first quarter. But the quick Hiram defense took over, scoring two baskets off a pair of steals. 

The Terriers took an 11-10 lead with 5:12 left in the first quarter and after that Hiram would never trail again.

Hiram held a seven-point, 25-18, lead at the end of the first as Wright paced the Terriers with 15 points in the opening frame.

Defiance cut the lead to three points to start the second quarter, before a pair of threes by freshman Haley Thompson pushed the Hiram lead to nine, 31-22, with 7:19 minutes remaining in the second. 

The Terriers used an 8-0 run to secure their first double-digit lead of the game, but the Yellow Jackets answered with a 6-0 run to cut the Hiram lead to five, 37-28. 

Hiram responded with two steals from junior duo MicKayla Baldwin and Madison Branch with 16 seconds remaining in the second to extend their lead back to 10.  

At the half, the Terriers held a 38-28, double-digit lead, led by 17 points from Wright. 

Hiram opened the second half on a 7-2 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Branch to put the Terriers ahead, 45-30.

After trading buckets with six minutes remaining in the third quarter, Thompson scored off a Yellow Jacket turnover to give herself double-digit points and extend the Terriers lead to 49-34. Thompson led the Terriers' in the third with eight of Hiram's 20 points, as the Terriers led, 58-41, heading to the fourth. 

In the fourth, Defiance went on an 8-2 run to cut the Terriers' lead to 11, 62-51, with just six minutes to play. But Wright scored four of the next eight points to stretch the Terriers lead back to 15, and Hiram closed out a 77-62 victory over the Yellow Jackets.

With the win, Hiram moves to 3-7 on the year, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 2-6 with the loss. 

Three Terriers finished the game with double-digit scoring performances. Wright tallied a team-high 27 points and six rebounds, while Thompson and Branch added 16 and 10 points, respectively. Wright also added a team-high six rebounds, shooting 11-of-19 from the floor.

Hiram will next hit the road on Wednesday, December 18 to take on Westminster (Pa.). The matchup with the Titans is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.
