Feb.2-GREENCASTLE, Ind.- The Hiram College women's basketball team fell to the DePauw Tigers on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 69-52.
DePauw came into tonight's contest as the 20th-ranked team in the country by D3hoops.com and improved to 18-4 (12-1 NCAC) with the win over Hiram.
The Terriers started the initial quarter taking their biggest lead of the game in the opening minutes.
Sophomore Alaina Conroy helped Hiram turn a three-point deficit into a five-point lead.
Sophomore Tashauna Wright kicked off the run with a layup before Conroy sank two jump shots and a three to push the Hiram advantage to 9-4.
The host responded with a 15-5 swing to close out the rest of the quarter, leading by five after one (19-14).
In the second quarter, freshman Josie Earnhardt knocked down a three and sophomore Madison Branch hit a jump shot to shrink the Tigers lead to as low as two (21-19).
Throughout the remainder of the second quarter, DePauw would hold Hiram to just six points, pushing their halftime advantage to 32-25 at the break.
Both sides would have their best offensive frames of the night in the third, as DePauw outscored the Terriers 21-16 in the frame. The Tigers would extend the lead to as large as 13 (46-33) on a three by Sydney Kopp. Hiram would respond, however, cutting the advantage back to seven on a bucket by CiCi Bright. By quarter's end, DePauw had extended their lead back to 12.
The Tigers maintained the scoring momentum, outscoring the Terriers 16-11 in the last quarter to secure the 69-52 win.
Offensively, Wright led the Hiram group with 17 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Branch finished the afternoon with 10 points and three assists, while Conroy added nine points.
Hiram will return home on Wednesday, February 6 as they host the Ladies of Kenyon College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
