HIRAM, Ohio -- The Hiram College women's basketball team improved its record to 4-1 on the season with a 57-46 win over non-conference foe Westminster (Pa.) on Tuesday evening.
Junior Kayla Yost (Norwalk, Ohio/Perkins) led the Terriers with 15 points.
Sophomore Mercedes Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Ponitz Career Technology Center) added 12 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Kaylee Shockley (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) finished with nine points and nine boards.
The Terriers took control of the contest right away, scoring the first seven points, capped off by a made jumper from senior Brianne Goodrich (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga).
A jumper from freshman Savana Lowery (Carrollton, Ohio/Carrollton) at the buzzer gave Hiram a 14-9 edge after one quarter of play.
Westminster (0-3) cut the Terrier lead to 16-15 midway through the second, but Hiram scored the final five points of the half to take a 21-15 advantage into the break.
The Terriers opened up the third quarter on a 12-2 run to build a 33-19 lead and take control of the game.
The Titans never got within single digits the rest of the way.
Hiram finished the game 21-of-63 (33.3 percent) from the field, while Westminster was 10-of-38 (26.3 percent).
Both teams shot extremely well from the free throw line, with the Terriers finishing 12-of-13 (92.3 percent) and the Titans going 22-of-24 (91.7 percent).
Hiram also forced Westminster to commit 26 turnovers, converting the miscues into 24 points.
The Terriers will be back at it on Saturday and Sunday as they take part in the Marietta Turkey Shootout. Hiram will take on the host Pioneers on Saturday at 6 p.m.
