Career bests highlight Day 2 of NCAC Championships for Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Hiram College men's and women's swimming & diving teams put together a solid day of competition on the second day of the NCAC Swimming & Diving Championships hosted by Denison.

The Terrier men sit 10th of 10 teams with 140 points, while the Terrier women are ninth of nine with 212 points.

On the men's side, Denison holds the lead with 1392.5 points, Kenyon is second with 1223.5 points and DePauw (Ind.) is third with 786 points.

Senior Danny Essel (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) led Hiram with a 25th place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in a season best time of 1:04.61. Essel also touched in 26th in the 400-yard I.M. in 4:46.61.

Sophomore Julian Gilbert (University Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) also recorded a 26th place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:10.00.

Freshman Reeve Bowling (Minneapolis, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) recorded a 27th place finish in the 100-yard fly in 56.23 seconds.

The 200-yard medley relay team of junior Jamal Hill (Inglewood, Calif./Juniperro Serra), sophomore Jory Gomes (Elk Grove, Calif./Consumres Oaks), Bowling and Essel rounded out the scoring for Hiram on the night with a 10th place finish in 1:48.73.

In the prelims in the morning, Hiram saw Bowling and Hill set two lifetime bests, with Gomes and Gilbert each setting one. Bowling, Gomes and Gilbert also followed with a lifetime best in the evening session.

On the women's side of competition, Kenyon holds the lead with 1322 points, Denison is second with 1177 points and DePauw (Ind.) rounds out the top three with 790.5 points.

The Terriers saw three swimmers place in the 400-yard I.M.

Senior Rachel Patten (Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta) placed 20th with a lifetime best time of 4:57.28, senior Marian Bade (Macungie, Pa./The Perkiomen Schools) was 24th in 5:11.49 and junior Meredith Fitschen-Brown (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) finished 26th in 5:23.27, which is also a new lifetime best.

The 200-yard medley relay team of junior Emily Kelly (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton), freshman Sierra Daniels (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson), freshman Meagan McCoy (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay Village) and Bade were ninth in 2:12.07.

The 800-yard freestyle relay tandem of Bade, Fitschen-Brown, Patten and Kelly were ninth with a time of 8:42.80.

Hiram also saw Fitschen-Brown, McCoy and Patten set new lifetime best times and Bade, Kelly and Daniels set new season-best times in the preliminary competition in the morning. In the evening, it was Bade, Kelly and McCoy all registering a lifetime best.

In all, the two teams have combined for 38 season best times and 21 lifetime bests in the first two days.

Hiram will close out the championships on Saturday, with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals starting at 6:30 p.m.
