FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Hiram College baseball team dropped both games of a double header to Dominican (Ill.) and Gettysburg (Pa.) at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.
The Terriers (0-4) fell in the first game to Dominican (2-4) 11-6 and dropped the nightcap 18-2 to Gettysburg (4-0).
In the first game against Dominican, Hiram was able to jump on the board first scoring twice in the third inning on RBI singles from sophomore Phil Ward (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) and senior Trevor Foster (Warren, Ohio/Champion).
The Stars would answer with a run in the forurth, two in the fifth and four more times in the fifth to open a 7-2 advantage.
The Terriers mounted a rally in the eighth to trim the Dominican lead to 7-5.
With two outs and a runner on third, freshman John Reid (Ravenna, Ohio/Crestwood) reached on an error that scored freshman Preston Patterson (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake). Following a single from freshman Bryan Engdahl (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual), junior Brandon Chesmar (Elyria, Ohio/Amherst Steele) would benefit from a Dominican error to score Reid.
Foster laced a single two batters later, scoring Engdahl and ending the scoring in the inning.
The Stars would answer with four more runs in the ninth. Hiram was able to answer with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame, on a RBI single by freshman Justin Joyce (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian), but would draw no closer.
Freshman Tristan Sprague (Mogadore, Ohio/Field) went 4.2 innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out a batter.
Foster led Hiram, going 3-for-5 with two RBI's. Engdahl also collected two hits and scored twice.
The second game against Gettysburg saw Hiram score first in the second inning when sophomore Brandon Kish (Poland, Ohio/Struther) crossed home on a passed ball.
The Terriers tacked on another run in the third to open up a 2-0 lead on a RBI single by freshman Christian Owens (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Woodridge).
But the Bullets would explode for 12 runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 12-2 lead. Gettysburg also scored three times each in the fifth and eighth inning.
Junior Corey Stamco (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele), Foster and Kish all paced the Terriers by each going 2-for-4.
Hiram will continue play in Florida with a single game on Tuesday, March 8, against Olivet (Mich.) at 9 a.m.
