NORTH CANTON, OHIO -- The Hiram Cross Country teams competed at the annual Ric Sayre Invitational hosted by Walsh University in North Canton. The Terrier women placed sixth and the men were fifth. [Complete Women's Results] [Complete Men's Results]
The Hiram women finished with 176 points to place sixth of six teams. John Carroll University captured the overall team title with 26 points and the University of Mount Union was second at 42 points. Host school Walsh rounded out the top-three teams with 71 points.
Individually, freshman Taylor Shutler (Salem/South Range) led Hiram with a 24:48.9 time and placed 72nd out of 92 runners. Senior Megan Orosz (Mentor/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) was the second Terrier to cross the finish line with a mark of 25:37.1. Junior Clarissa Claflin (Mayfield/Mayfield) was third with a mark of 25:37.1 and senior Natalie Richardson (McConnelsville/Morgan) had the fourth quickest time at 26:00.5. Senior Bonnie Bentar (Monroe, Mich./Jefferson) was fifth on the team in a time of 26:19.3 and was followed by junior Carly Kidner (Ashtabula/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) with a time of 27:25.6. Senior Elizabeth Haase (Akron/Firestone) recorded a time of 27:36.7 to round out the scoring times. Also competing for Hiram was sophomore Sarah Dutton (Columbia, Md./Columbia) who ran a time of 27:36.7. Sophomore Ellen Rochford (Akron/St. Vincent-St. Mary) posted a time of 29:31.1 and was followed by senior Jill Kramer (Cleveland/St. Joseph Academy) in a time of 30:53.7. Completing the list of Terrier competitors for the women was junior Alexis Alvarado (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) who completed the course in a time of 31:47.4.
The men finished the meet with a team-total 146 points to place fifth of five teams. Walsh won the event with a total of 33 points, followed by John Carroll in second with 39 points. Mount Union rounded out the top-three team finishes with 65 points.
Freshman Matthew Walker (Stow) paced the Hiram men with a time of 29:15.4 and finished 45th overall individually out of 80 runners. Seniors Brendan Curtin (Burton/Berkshire) and Bryan Nemire (Berlin Heights/Edison) finished back-to-back with times of 29:52.7 and 30:00.5 respectively. Junior Dennis Kirimi (Nayiobi, Kenya) had the fourth quickest time for the men at 31:31.0. Freshman Kevin Kerper (Twinsburg) was fifth to cross the finish line with a mark of 31:39.7. Junior Anthony Franklin (Newbury) and junior Tomoyuki Fujimoto (Mino, Japan) rounded out the scoring times at 34:06.7 and 34:19.3. In addition, junior Mason Yeater (Kinsman/Badger) and Jabez Patterson (Chicago, Ill./Noble Street Charter School) also competed for Hiram and turned in times of 43:26.0 and 49:31.0.
The Hiram Cross Country teams will next compete at the annual Penn State-Behrend (Pa.) Invitational next Saturday, Sept. 15 in Erie, Pa. The first race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
