Women's Lacrosse Beats Wilmington

Senior Lacey Zerner (Canton/Jackson) and freshman Rebecca Goetz (Buffalo, N.Y./Frontier) each scored four goals in win against Wilmington.

HIRAM, OHIO  --  Senior Lacey Zerner (Canton/Jackson) and freshman Rebecca Goetz (Buffalo, N.Y./Frontier) each scored four goals to help lead the Hiram College women's lacrosse team past Wilmington College, 16-4, in a non-conference game at Charles A. Henry Field.

Hiram (3-3) scored the first two goals of the game beginning with a score on a free-position shot by Goetz at the 26:26 minute mark of the first half.  Zerner followed the Goetz goal with a marker of her own at 22:41 to give the Terriers an early 2-0 lead.  Wilmington (0-7) cut the lead in half 13 seconds later with its first goal of the game making the score 2-1 with 22:28 left before halftime.  The Terriers tallied the next two goals with scores from freshman Hannah Schaefer (Kent/Roosevelt) and Goetz, making the score 4-1.  The Quakers recorded their final goal of the period with 14:41 remaining, but Hiram added four goals of its own to complete the scoring in the half with two goals from Goetz and two from freshman JoLyn Grover (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) as the Terriers led 8-2 at the break.

In the second half, Hiram kept the offensive onslaught going with six unanswered goals to begin the final 30 minutes, with the first three being scored by Zerner.  Schaefer scored two goals and Grover another score during the point streak.  Wilmington found the back of the net twice in the final 11 minutes to make the score 14-4, but Hiram freshman Allison Spitz (Hudson) recorded the final two scores of the game as the Terriers went on to claim the 16-4 win.

Zerner led all Hiram players with four goals and an assist for a five-point day.  Goetz was second with four goals, Grover and Schaefer were tied for third with three goals and Spitz added two goals.  Rounding out the point scorers were senior Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) and freshmen Marian Bade (Macungie, Pa./The Perkiomen School) and Alyssa Zollos (Westlake) with one assist each.

In net, freshman Rebecca Greenhouse (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston) played all 60 minutes and picked up the win stopping 12 of 16 shots faced.

Hiram will host Thiel (Pa.) College on Wednesday, Mar. 27 in a non-conference game at Henry Field.  The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
