CLEVELAND, Ohio - For the second time during the 2017-18 season, Hiram women's basketball junior forward Erica Johnson has been named the North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Johnson helped lift the Terriers to a pair of wins over The College of Wooster and Allegheny College last week. The wins pushed the Terriers to the .500 mark overall, and helped the team climb to 6-5 in conference play (currently fourth in the NCAC standings).
Over the span of the two games, Johnson shot .550 from the field while averaging a double-double. She posted 13 points per game, while adding 16 rebounds per night. She also added 4.5 steals per contest. In the victory over Wooster, Johnson tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds, securing her third double-double over four games. She then made it three double-doubles in a row in Saturday's victory over Allegheny, when she tallied 13 points to go along with a career-high 21 rebounds. The game marked the second time that she has tallied her career high in rebounds at Allegheny, posting 14 against the Gators in Meadville last season.
Johnson was a nightmare for the opposition on the glass last week, tallying 14 offensive boards, including eight against the Scots. She has now tallied at least six offensive rebounds in a game, eight times on the season and currently leads the NCAC by a wide margin in offensive boards (currently with 88 - 25 more than second-place Nicole Popovich of Ohio Wesleyan).
The junior forward has been one of the top players for the Terriers this season, ranking among the conference's best in a number of categories. Along with leading the NCAC in offensive rebounds, she currently sits well above the rest of the league in steals per game (2.8). Additionally, she ranks second in the NCAC in rebounds per night (9.9) and sits among league leaders in field-goal percentage (.470).
Since posting her first-career double-double against the Gators back on December 9, Johnson has found a different gear. In the 10 games since she is averaging 10 points and 11.6 rebounds per night. She has recorded double-digit rebounds in eight of the ten games, and has scored below eight points just once.
Johnson becomes the third player in the NCAC this season to earn multiple Player of the Week honors, joining Kenyon's Paige Matijasich and DePauw's Sydney Kopp.
Erica and the Terriers will get back to work on Friday, Feb. 2 as they play host to the Tigers of DePauw. The matchup is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
