March 7-TUCSON, Ariz. – The Hiram College softball team dropped a pair of games, falling to Central (12-6) and Trine (19-0), Wednesday afternoon.
The Terriers had tough matchups during day three, facing #21 Central and #5 Trine both ranked by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
In the game against Central, Hiram recorded 11 hits and five Terriers tallied a run.
The Dutch quickly got to work in game one, collecting five of their 12 runs in the first two innings, leading Hiram 5-2.
Hiram got their first run of the game in the second inning when freshman Mariah Sheffield singled to left field, and scored junior Makenzie Dombrowski. The next play, freshman Amanda Holzman reached first on an error, bringing home sophomore Isabelle Miranda.
The fourth inning was a scoreless one for Hiram and Central.
Dombrowski scored the last Hiram run of the game in the seventh inning to bring the final score to 12-6, in Central's favor.
The matchup with Trine went to five innings.
Offensively, the Terriers received a hit from both Hager and sophomore Bebe Grein.
In game two, three pitchers were featured including junior Chase Martinez, freshman Bailey Scheck, and sophomore Shalynn Call made her season debut. Martinez and Scheck each allowed only four hits apiece. Scheck also recorded a career-high three strikeouts.
For day four of the Tucson Invitational, the Terriers will take on Moravian Thursday, March 8 at 11:00 a.m. and Fontbonne at 1:00 p.m.
