MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Hiram College softball team won Game 2 in its final at bat to earn a doubleheader split with Allegheny (Pa.) in its season finale on Monday evening.
The Gators (14-13-1, 10-5-1) won the opener 14-6, but the Terriers (9-23, 5-11) captured the nightcap 5-4.
The second game saw Allegheny scores runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game at 4-4.
In the seventh, sophomore Emily Syrjala (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) reached on an error and moved to second to lead off the inning.
Allegheny would bring the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but sophomore Brittany Zajac (Corry, Pa.) induced a flyout to end the game.
Hiram opened the scoring in the first by scoring three times.
Junior Nicole Hoy (Brunswick) tripled home a run and junior Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge) would double in a run. Garland would come around to score on an error to give the Terriers the 3-0 advantage.
Hiram tacked on another run in the third on a RBI double by Wright. But the Gators would score four unanswered runs, before Hiram scored in the seventh to pick up the win.
Zajac picked up her fourth win of the season by firing a complete game. Wright led the Terrier attack, going 2-for-4 with 2-RBI's and a run scored.
In Game 1, Allegheny took control of the contest in the first inning, plating six runs.
Hiram responded with three runs in the second on RBI doubles by Syrjala and Perrotta and also benefitted from an error for another run.
The Gators came right back with two more runs in the bottom of the second to open up an 8-3 advantage.
Hiram would pull within 8-5 in the third inning on a RBI single from Syrjala. Both Perrotta and Wright were also hit by pitches with the bases loaded to score runs.
But Allegheny would score six more runs for the 14-6 win. The game was ended in the fifth inning due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.
Perrotta and Syrjala each collected two hits, while junior Jessica Wahl (Akron/Ellet) scored twice in the game.
