FORT MYERS, FLA. -- The Hiram College softball team recorded a pair of victories against Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College, 5-2, and Worcester Polytechnical (Mass.) Institute, 4-1, to extend its winning streak to four games and wrap-up its Florida trip to the Gene Cusic Classic.
In game one, Hiram (5-1) took the early lead scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a RBI groundout by junior Jessica Bolanz (Randolph/Waterloo) and a passed ball on a strikeout that allowed sophomore All-NCAC outfielder Miranda Wright (Richfield/Revere) to score from third base. Eastern Nazarene (2-3) got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but Hiram tacked on another run in the second on a RBI double by freshman Jessica Wahl (Akron/Ellet) to extend the lead back to two runs, 3-1. The Lions tallied a run in the third, but the Terriers again answered the run with a run of their own in the the fourth making the score 4-2. Hiram tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a double by Bolanz and got ENC to record three straight outs in its final at-bat to record the 5-2 win.
At the plate, Bolanz and Wright both recorded a pair of hits to lead the Hiram offense. Bolanz finished two-of-four with two RBI. Wright went a perfect two-of-two with a pair of runs scored.
Freshman pitcher Taylor Miller (Kent/Roosevelt) pitched the entire game and got the win allowing two runs on five hits and struck out nine batters.
Against WPI, Hiram (5-1) scored a run in the top of the first and second innings thanks to a RBI double by Wright and a RBI single by freshman Nicole Hoy (Brunswick) to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead. WPI cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Hiram got some breathing room in the seventh with a pair of runs highlighted by a solo homerun by sophomore Angela Perella (Lyndhurst/Beaumont) making the score 4-1 heading into the bottom of the frame. WPI recorded two quick outs but would get a runner on base with a double to extend the inning. Hiram then recorded the final out of the game with an ensuing strikeout to take the 4-1 victory.
Hiram totaled seven hits in the game led by Hoy and Wright with a pair of hits each. Hoy went two-of-three with a run scored and a RBI. Wright finished two-for-four with a RBI. Perella finished the game one-for-one with the homerun in her only plate appearance to go along with the run scored and RBI.
At pitcher, freshman Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge) pitched the entire game and got the win. She allowed just the lone run on five hits and struck out four batters in seven innings of work.
The Terriers will have the next two days off as Hiram will make a stop in Columbus, Ga. to take part in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Lead-Off Classic. Hiram will play a total of three games beginning with two games on Friday, Mar. 8. The Terriers will take on Kean (N.J.) University at 3 p.m., followed by a matchup against Emory (Ga.) University at 5:30 p.m.
