Softball Records Wins Against Penn State-Behrend (Pa.) and Wartburg (Iowa)

FORT MYERS, FLA.  --  The Hiram College softball team came away with a pair of victories on the second day of its Florida trip defeating Penn State-Behrend, 8-0, and Wartburg (Iowa) College, 8-4, as part of the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

Against Wartburg, the Knights (1-5) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.  Hiram (3-1) then took the lead in the fourth scoring four runs that included a two-RBI single by freshman Danielle Latine (Eastlake/North), a RBI single by sophomore Samantha Hughes (Hookstown, Pa./Hopewell) and a RBI triple by junior Jessica Bolanz (Randolph/Waterloo) to make the score 4-1.  Wartburg answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to narrow the gap to 4-3.  The lead remained just one for Hiram until the sixth inning when the Terriers crossed the plate four more times on a series of RBI base hits to extend the lead to 8-3.  The Knights got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning on a double steal, but Hiram still led 8-4.  Following a scoreless top of the seventh by Hiram, Wartburg led-off its half of the inning with a single.  But the Terrier defense recorded a double play on the Knights' ensuing at-bat, followed by a strikeout to end the game and seal an 8-4 victory.

Hiram finished the game with 10 hits with three players recording multi-hit games.  Latine, Bolanz and sophomore Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua/Crestwood) all finished two-for-four at the plate to lead the Terrier offense.  Latine added a run scored and three RBI, while Bolanz Zuponcic both scored a run and had a RBI.

On the mound, freshman Taylor Miller (Kent/Roosevelt) started the game, but would get a no decision pitching three-and-a-third innings giving up three runs on five hits and had one strikeout.  Fellow freshman Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge) pitched the final three and two-thirds innings to claim the win after allowing one run on one hit and struck out three batters.

Individual statistics from the Penn State-Behrend game will be posted when available.  Stay tuned for updates.

Hiram will wrap-up its trip to Fort Myers, Fla. tomorrow (Tuesday, Mar. 5) with a pair of games beginning with a matchup against Eastern (Mass.) Nazarene College at 9 a.m., followed by a game against Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnical Institute at 1 p.m.
