HIRAM, OHIO -- The Hiram College softball team saw a six-game winning streak come to an end with a pair of losses against Allegheny (Pa.) College, 4-2 and 3-1, in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader in the regular-season home finale on senior day.
With the losses, the Terriers fall to 18-16 overall and 8-6 in the NCAC. The Gators improve to 25-8-1 overall and 11-3 NCAC.
In game one, both teams remained scoreless until the second inning when the two teams traded runs with Hiram's score coming on a defensive error with bases loaded. The Terriers took the lead in the third with a run on a RBI-single by sophomore shortstop Jessica Bolanz (Randolph/Waterloo) to give Hiram a 2-1 advantage. The lead remained a run for Hiram until the top of the seventh inning when the Gators recorded three runs as a result of a failed pickoff attempt with runners on second and third and a two-RBI single later in the inning that gave Allegheny a 4-2 lead. The Terriers then recorded three straight outs in their half of the inning giving the Gators the two-run victory.
Hiram recorded just two hits in the game with Bolanz and sophomore outfielder Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ont./St. Joseph's) reaching base safely via a base hit. Bolanz ended the game one-of-three with a RBI and Loyer went one-of-four overall with a run scored.
Freshman pitcher Taylor Charles (Akron/Ellet) pitched all seven innings for Hiram, but suffered the loss and is now 11-7 on the year. She allowed four runs, two earned, on nine hits and struck out three batters.
In the nightcap, Allegheny struck first scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run homerun. Hiram cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame thanks to a RBI-single by Charles. The score remained 2-1 until the sixth inning, despite Hiram having bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, but could not get any runs across. The Gators tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to extend the lead to 3-1. Following a scoreless Allegheny seventh, Hiram recorded three straight outs in its final at-bats as the Gators went to claim the 3-1 win.
Four different Hiram players recorded hits in game two. Charles, senior All-Region outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad), senior third baseman Ashley Pike (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) and senior All-Region first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Dayton) all finished the game one-of-three at the plate. Charles also added a RBI, while Cooney scored the team's only run.
On the mound, junior Ashley Hinkle (Parma) got the start, but would be replaced following the Allegheny homerun, and would suffer the loss to fall to 3-3 overall. Senior Amethyst Brigham (Middlefield) came on to pitch the final six and two-thirds innings allowing one run on four hits and struck out five batters.
Hiram will conclude the 2012 regular season when it travels to Granville for a NCAC twinbill against Denison University on Saturday, Apr. 28. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
