HIRAM, OHIO -- Freshman outfielder Miranda Wright (Richfield/Revere) hit a walk-off RBI double in bottom of seventh inning of game two of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Kenyon College that gave the Terriers a two-game sweep by the scores of 11-3 in six innings and 6-5.
With the sweep, the Terriers improve to 11-13 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC. The Ladies fall to 11-19 overall and 3-5 NCAC.
In game one, Hiram struck first with three runs in the bottom of the second inning that included RBI singles by freshman catcher Taylor Petersal (Warren/Champion), senior All-Region outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad) and sophomore outfielder Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph's). But Kenyon came right back to tally three runs of its own in the top half of the third inning to even the game at 3-3. The two teams remained deadlocked until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Terriers tacked on eight runs, that included a RBI single by Wright to put Hiram up by eight ending the game with a final score of 11-3.
Hiram recorded 16 hits in the game and was led by Cooney who went three-of-four overall with a run scored and a RBI. Five other Terrier players each finished the game with two hits, including senior All-Region first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Dayton) who went two-of-three with two runs scored and two RBI. Wright also posted a two-of-three effort at the plate to go along with a run scored and a RBI.
On the mound, freshman Taylor Charles (Akron/Ellet) went the distance to pick up her sixth win of the season (6-6 overall). She allowed three runs on five hits and struck out four batters.
In the nightcap, Kenyon scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning to grab an early 1-0 lead. Hiram answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-RBI double by Wright making the score 2-1. The Ladies again rallied with a run in the third to even the contest at 2-2. The Terriers then scored runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to reclaim the lead with a 5-2 margin. Kenyon rallied a final time in the top of the seventh with three runs tying the game again by the score of 5-5. During Hiram's final at-bat in regulation, the Terriers led off with a fly-out, but freshman Angella Perella (Lyndhurst/Beaumont) followed with a double to put the possible winning run in scoring position. Wright then recorded her second double of the game scoring Perella and clinched the 6-5 walk-off victory.
The Hiram bats stayed hot in game two with 12 hits with Wright finishing a perfect four-for-four with a run scored and three RBI. Loyer and Singer also recorded multi-hit games with a pair of two-for-four efforts. Loyer also scored and drove in a run, while Singer added a run scored.
Charles started the second game on the mound, but would be replaced to begin the fifth inning. She came back in the game in the seventh and would end up being the pitcher of record to claim her seventh win of the season and improve to 7-6 overall. Charles pitched a total of five innings allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and had one strikeout. Senior Amethyst Brigham (Middlefield/Ohio State), who replaced Charles in the fifth, lasted two innings while giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits and tallied one strikeout.
Hiram will look to keep momentum going when the Terriers host Wittenberg University in a scheduled NCAC doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 14 at Herndon Field. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
