Softball Drops a Pair of Games at Rebel Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, FLA.  --  The Hiram College softball team dropped a pair of games losing to Catholic (Wash. D.C.), 16-10, in the first game and fell to Bluffton University, 7-1, in the nightcap.

Following today's games, the Terriers are now 2-4 overall.

In the game against Bluffton, Hiram fell behind early as the Beavers crossed home plate four times in the bottom of the first inning.  The Terrier offense struggled recording just four hits in the game and would score their only run in the top of the third on a RBI ground out by sophomore utility player Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph's) with bases loaded.  Bluffton added to its lead with three runs in the fifth to go on to the 7-1 win.

Four different Terrier players recorded a base hit in the game with freshman catcher Samantha Hughes (Hookstown, Pa./Hopewell) finishing one-of-two with a run scored.  Senior All-Region outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad), senior All-Region first baseman Alee Singer (Bath/Revere) and senior third baseman Ashley Pike (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) each went one-of-three.

On the mound, junior Ashley Hinkle (Parma) got the start, but would suffer the loss allowing four runs on three hits.  Senior Amethyst Brigham (Middlefield/Cardinal) came on to pitch four and two-thirds innings of relief giving up three runs on four hits and had one strikeout.  Freshman Taylor Charles (Akron/Ellet) pitched the final inning-and-a-third with no runs scored on one hit.

In the earlier game against Catholic, Hiram was defeated by the final of 16-10. 

Hiram will be off tomorrow and will resume the schedule on Thursday, Mar. 8 with games against Beloit (Wisc.) College at 1 p.m., followed by a matchup against Presentation (S.D.) College at 5 p.m.
