KISSIMMEE, FLA. -- The Hiram College softball team lost a pair of games to begin the 2012 season at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Terriers lost their first game, 2-1, against Albion (Mich.) College in 10 innings and dropped the nightcap, 8-6, in eight innings against Methodist (N.C.) University.
Following today's games, the Terriers begin the season with a 0-2 overall record.
Against Albion, the Britons struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning to grab the early lead. Hiram came right back to even the score at 1-1 in the top of the second on a RBI fielder's choice by freshman Taylor Charles (Akron/Ellet). Neither team scored any more runs through seven innings, sending the game into extra frames. The teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the bottom of the 10th inning when Albion tallied the game-winning run on a RBI single for the 2-1 victory.
Senior All-Region first baseman Alee Singer (Bath/Revere) had a team-leading two hits in three at-bats. Senior All-Region outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad) and senior All-NCAC outfielder Marlene Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) were the other Terrier players to record a hit.
On the mound, Charles pitched the entire game, but would suffer the loss, dropping her to 0-1 to begin the season. She allowed two runs, one earned, on eight hits and struck out four batters.
In the game against Methodist (N.C.), the Terriers would fall by the final of 8-5. More details to follow.
Hiram will continue is Florida trip tomorrow (Monday, Mar. 5) with a pair of games beginning with a matchup against Sage (N.Y.) College at 3 p.m., followed by Husson (Maine) University at 5 p.m.
