The Hiram College men's volleyball team traveled to Rochester, N.Y. to open a weekend tournament at Nazareth College. In their first of three games, the Terriers fell 3-0 to Wells College.
The Express, who moved to 5-2 on the season with the win, took the match by set scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-23.
Mid-set runs by Wells proved costly for the Terriers in both the first and second sets of action. In the opening game, Hiram found themselves trailing by just one, 10-9, before a 10-3 run by Wells put the Express up by eight (20-12). Then would then hold for the 10-point win.
In set two, The Express turned a 6-6 tie into a 12-7 advantage with a 6-1 run, and once again did not look back, capturing the set by an equal score of 25-15.
Wells would run out to an 8-2 lead in the third set before the Terriers mounted some pressure of their own. Still trailing by six (15-9), Hiram put together a 5-1 run to pull within two (16-14). Andrew Gard tallied a pair of kills in the run, while Tom Suppan and Alex Andrzejewski each added one.
The Terriers would get within a point (23-22) late in the set thanks to back-to-back kills from Gard. However, Wells was able to hold serve in the final points, taking the third game, 25-23, and the match in straight sets.
Defensively, Dangelo Boehner and Gard led the way. Boehner finished with four block assists, while Gard added two and the Terriers lone solo block of the evening.
The Terriers will complete play at Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon with two more games. Hiram will first take on SUNY-Poly at 3 p.m. before squaring off with Elmira at 5.
