Terrier Men's Volleyball Falls to Adrian in Season Opener

The Hiram College men's volleyball team opened their 2019 season, dropping a 3-1 decision to Adrian College on the first day of the Hiram Invitational.

Playing the first of back-to-back home tournaments to open the season, the Terriers fell in their first game by set scores of 25-19, 21-25, 16-25 and 18-25.

With the opening set knotted at 8-8, the Terriers took control of the first set with a quick 4-1 run. Sophomore Alex Andrzejewski and Andrew Gard, as well as freshman Tom Supan, all contributed to the run to give the Terriers a 12-9 lead. Hiram would never again trail in the opening game.

Supan would make a splash in his first-career set as a Terrier, putting down two more kills in a 5-0 run that gave Hiram their largest lead of the game (22-15). He finished the first set with six kills.

From the first set in which the Terriers hit .344, the Adrian defense picked up, holding Hiram to a .161 percentage in the second set; even in the third; and -.065 in the fourth and final game.

The second set saw the game tied at 10-10 before a 6-2 Bulldog run gave Adrian the lead for good. Hiram would lead just briefly in the third set and would not lead in the fourth, giving the Bulldogs the 3-1 victory.

Supan led the offense in his first-career game, hitting .241 while putting down 14 kills. Sophomore Cory Fischer added eight kills, while Andrzejewski and Gard posted seven kills, each. Splitting time at the setter position, sophomore Jake Lininger finished with 22 assists, while freshman Andrew Diaz totaled 17.

Defensively, Fischer led the way with 10 digs, while Gard posted three of Hiram's nine blocks.

The Terriers will be back in action tomorrow morning on the second day of the Hiram invite as they play host to Thomas More College at 11 a.m.
