Men's Soccer prevails in 2-1 victory over DePauw

HIRAM, Ohio- The Men's Soccer team defeated conference rival DePauw (Ind.) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Terriers improve to a 5-4-2, 2-1 NCAC record on the season, while the Tigers fall to 6-3-2, 1-2 NCAC.

DePauw (Ind.) got on the board two minutes into the game when Julian Gonzalez crossed the ball to Peter White, who fired the shot and gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Hiram answered back in the 33rd minute when freshman Tyler Helderman (Tallmadge, Ohio/ Tallmadge) scored to tie the game at one going into halftime. Senior John Pretzlav (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/ Kenston) was awarded with the assist.  

Both teams had several opportunities to break the tie in the second half. DePauw took eight shots and Hiram took five. But senior Neil Zook (Doylestown, Ohio/ Chippewa) was the only player to prevail. Junior Quinn Galecki (Lancaster Ohio, Lancaster) attempted to pass the ball in the box, but the Tiger goalkeeper kicked the ball out to Zook. The ball then deflected off of Zook and past the goalkeeper to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead and secure the victory for Hiram.  

In goal, junior Luke Wilhelm (Shaker Heights, Ohio/ University School) played the entire match and finished with seven saves.

Although the Terriers won the match, the Tigers held a 12-8 edge in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Hiram will play next on Wednesday, October 12 at 7:30 when they battle Allegheny (Pa.) in a conference matchup at home.
