ERIE, Pa. -- The Hiram College men's soccer team came up on the short end of a 1-0 contest against Houghton (N.Y.) in the championship match of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament hosted by Penn-State Behrend on Saturday.
Houghton (1-0-1) scored the lone goal of the match just 2:43 into play. Kyle Brown slipped behind the defense and scored on a point blank shot into the net.
The Terrier (1-1-0) defense held strong the rest of the way, limiting the Highlanders to just one more shot.
Junior Trever Wendel (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) paced the Hiram offense by firing two shots, with one coming on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Luke Wilhelm (Shaker Heights, Ohio/University School) made one save in the match.
Hiram held a 6-2 edge in shots and also took four corner kicks, compared to none for Houghton.
The Terriers will return to competition on Thursday, September 8, as they take on Grove City (Pa.) in the first match of the Allegheny (Pa.) Classic.
