HIRAM, OHIO -- The Hiram College men's lacrosse team lost to Capital University, 8-3, in a non-conference game at Charles A. Henry Field.
Hiram (1-4) took the early lead with an unassisted goal by sophomore John Deegan (Lakewood/St. Edward) at the 13:14 minute mark. Capital (5-1) then went on a five-goal scoring run to end the half, including scoring three of those goals in the first period to lead 3-1 after the first 15 minutes.
The Crusaders scored the only two goals of the second period to extend their margin to 5-1 heading into halftime.
In similar fashion to the start of the first quarter, Deegan led the third period off with a goal at the 12:49 mark. Fellow sophomore Chris Lekan (North Olmsted/Holy Name) was credited with an assist. Capital then scored back-to-back goals to make it a 7-2 contest before freshman Douglas Legris (Fairfax, Verm./Bellows Free Academy) found the back of the net to end the scoring in the period, but Hiram would still trail 7-3 heading into the final quarter.
The only goal in the fourth was an insurance goal by Capital to put the Crusaders up by five goals and went on to win by that margin with a final score of 8-3.
Deegan led all Hiram scorers with his two goals for two points. Legris added a point with his goal scored and Lekan and freshman Garet Johnston (Kent/Wooster) both scored an assist to round out the point scorers.
In goal, sophomore Sawyer Lott (Sunbury/Big Walnut) started and played all 60 minutes with 16 saves in 24 shots faced.
Hiram will travel to Houghton, N.Y. for a non-conference matchup against Houghton (N.Y.) College on Thursday, Mar. 27. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
