After leading the Terrier men's basketball team to a pair of wins in conference play last week, Hiram sophomore Jalen Kirksey has been named the North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week, announced the NCAC on Monday afternoon.
The sophomore standout from Massillon posted his two highest scoring outputs of the season, averaging 18.5 points and three steals per game.
In a Wednesday victory over Denison University, Kirksey tallied a team-high 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. More importantly, with the game on the line, the Terrier sophomore came through in the clutch, driving the length of the floor with six seconds remaining to score the go-ahead basket. In addition to his scoring output, he added a steals and four rebounds to his totals.
In Saturday's victory, an 86-84 win over Ohio Wesleyan, Kirksey tallied career highs in both steals and points. He posted five takeaways while dropping 22 points. His point total matched his Terrier high, which he also posted against the Battling Bishops. Kirksey finished the game 7-of-11 from the field and knocked down a pair of key free throws in the final minute to help preserve the win.
For the week, Kirksey shot 13-of-23 from the field lifting his shooting percentage for the season to .444. Currently, Jalen leads the NCAC in steals per game (1.7) and ranks second on the team with 11.3 points per night.
Kirksey's Player of the Week award marks the first of his career and the first by a Terrier men's basketball player this season.
Kirksey and the Terriers will be in action on Wednesday evening as they play host to La Roche College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
