Dean/Jones Lead Men's Hoops to Third Straight

Dec. 17 – HIRAM, Ohio – The Terrier men's basketball team made it three-straight over conference opponents, as Hiram upended DePauw University, 66-60 on Sunday afternoon.

Hiram captured both games of a back-to-back, starting with an overtime victory against Wabash on Saturday, before taking down the Tigers in Price Gymnasium, today.

Sophomore Sherman Dean III and senior Kelvin Jones led the Terrier offensive attack, combining for 38 points. Dean tallied a career-high 17 points off the bench, single-handedly outscoring the DePauw reserves. He knocked down a career-best five, three-point baskets (5-10) and finished 6-of-11 from the field.

Dean has been a consistent offensive option for the Terriers off the bench. During Hiram's current three-game winning streak, the sophomore is averaging 11.3 points per night.

Despite being double and triple-teamed through most of the afternoon, Jones still finished with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Additionally, he added nine rebounds, coming just one shy of his sixth double-double of the year.

The first half of action was played close, with neither team taking more than a seven-point lead. The advantage changed hands 10 times through the first 20 minutes, with Hiram holding as much as a three-point lead (18-15) on a layup by Jones with 9:45 to play in the half.

With the score knotted at 20, DePauw posted a seven-point run, which was capped by a James Clarke three pointer that gave the Tigers a 27-20 advantage.

Dean would keep the Terriers in the ball game, knocking down four-consecutive three-point baskets to turn a seven point deficit into a one-point lead with 2:46 to play in the frame (32-31). However, DePauw would respond with a 6-0 run to end the half, taking the halftime advantage, 37-32.

The Tiger lead would swell to as many as nine (45-36) with 16:27 to play in the game. Following a timeout, Hiram would begin to claw their way back in.

It took ten minutes of game time, but Hiram managed to put together a 21-10 run to take back the lead for the first time in the second half with 6:26 to play. Following a fast-break dunk from Jalen Kirksey, Dean and Jones both knocked down shots before senior Isaiah Matthews sank the go ahead triple to give Hiram the 57-55 lead.

DePauw closed the gap to one (61-60) on a three by Josh Hall with 1:18 left in regulation. However, the Hiram defense responded, holding the Tiger offense scoreless over the final minute.

Jones extended the lead with a pair of free throws and, with 18 seconds to play, senior Terrence Warren put the game on ice with a triple, giving Hiram the 66-60 win.

Hiram continued to capitalize on their opponents' mistakes, turning 16 DePauw turnovers into 23 points.

Along with Jones and Dean, Paul Ortiz finished with 10 points, while Kirksey added eight points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Hiram, who now sits a half-game ahead of Denison University for third place in the conference standings, will be back in action on Wednesday, December 20. The Terriers take a break from conference play as they host the Beavers of Bluffton College. The matchup is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
