Nov. 18 - LATROBE, Pa. - The Hiram College men's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season dropping an 81-68 decision to Saint Vincent College on Saturday evening.
Hiram's first bucket of the season was scored on their opening possession as Paul Ortiz scored on his first shot of the game to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead.
The visitors kept the first half close for the opening nine minutes as a Sherman Dean III three-pointer cut the Bearcat lead to 14-11 with 11:06 remaining in the frame.
Over the next five mintues of play, a 14-6 run by the hosts would expand the Saint Vincent advantage to 11 (28-17). The Terriers would go into the break trailing by double figures, 43-31.
The Saint Vincent offense clicked in the first 20 minutes, shooting over 65% from the field.
A 19-10 run by the hosts over the opening seven minutes would push the Bearcat advantage to 21 (62-41) with 13:04 to play. The lead would then grow to as many as 24 (69-45) before settling on the 13-point difference.
The Bearcats received a boost from their second unit, outscoring the Terriers 42-30 in bench points. Saint Vincent also shot efficiently from the field, connecting on 53% of their shots, opposed to 40% from the Terriers.
Senior Paul Ortiz led the Terrier effort with 13 points, while Kelvin Jones finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Freshman Jalen Kirksey also performed well in the game. Making a start in his first career game, the former Massilon Tiger finished with eight points in his Hiram debut.
The Terriers will get back to work on Tuesday, November 21 as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on La Roche College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
