Football falls in season opener to Westminster (Pa.)

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Hiram College football team dropped its opener of the 2016 season to Westminster (Pa.) by a 40-0 score on Saturday evening.

The Terriers are 0-1 on the young season, while the Titans stand at 1-0.

Senior Kyle Burchett (Fairport Harbor, Ohio/Harding) paced the Hiram defense with nine total tackles, with 3.5 coming for a loss. He also recorded a sack.

Senior Dan Hernandez (San Diego, Calif./Castle Park) recorded seven tackles and senior D.D. Fleetion (Youngstown, Ohio/East) had four tackles to go along with an interception.

Senior quarterback Domenic Paolo (Chardon, Ohio/Fairport Harding) threw for 126 yards and junior Danny Robinson (Labelle, Fla./Labelle) rushed for 46 yards.

Senior Akili Tate (Los Angeles, Calif./Juniperro Serra) posted four catches for 38 yards and senior David Perkins (Santa Ana, Calif./Segerstrom) finished with 36 yards receiving on four catches.

Westminster got things rolling early, taking the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. The Titans ensuring 2-point conversion try failed.

The Titans pushed their lead to 12-0 in the second, going on a 6-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run.

Westminster held a 12-0 lead heading into the break.

The Titans scored two touchdowns in the final five minutes of the third and added two more scores in the fourth quarter to cap off the victory.

Westminster outgained the Terriers 449-174 in the contest.

Hiram will look to rebound on Saturday, September 17 as it hosts Kenyon in their home and NCAC opener. Kickoff during Homecoming festivities is set for 1 p.m.
