Sept. 20 – HIRAM, Ohio – Having recently added a competitive cheer & STUNT program as the institutions 16th intercollegiate sport, Hiram College athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Samantha Campbell as the program's inaugural head coach.
Campbell will be tasked with starting the cheer & STUNT program in 2017-18 with plans to participate as a full varsity sport in the 2018-19 campaign.
Campbell joins the Terrier coaching staff after spending a year as the assistant coach with the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas.
"We are both pleased and excited to have Samantha Campbell on board as our first Head Cheer & STUNT coach," commented Director of Athletics Ellen Dempsey. "As an undergrad, Samantha was part of the rise of Alma College Cheer & STUNT from a new program to a National powerhouse. She understands what it takes to build a competitive program in this fast-growing sport."
Campbell was a four-year member of the Scot Cheer & STUNT program that began during her freshman season in 2012-13. It took just one year for the Scots to rise to prominence, placing second at the National Cheer Association Championships for three-consecutive seasons.
A two-year captain on the squad, Campbell led Alma to National qualifications in the STUNT Championships, where they placed fourth in 2014 and third in 2015 and 2016. In addition to helping the team earn National recognition, Samantha also earned individual honors, being named a STUNT All-American in three-consecutive years.
It is this experience in helping a new program rise to prominence that interested Campbell in the Terrier's head coaching position.
"The biggest benefit for me, as well as the athletes who choose to be part of building a new program, is that we get to make it our own," remarked Campbell. "I am looking to recruit athletes who share the passion for cheerleading and who aspire to build a legacy at Hiram College."
Following her graduation from Alma, Campbell spent the 2016-17 season as an assistant coach for the University of the Ozarks, a Division III member of the American Southwest Conference (ASC). While with the Eagles, Campbell helped bring in a 14-member recruiting class, while helping the cheer & STUNT team earn a fourth-place finish at the NCA College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla.
"I gained interest in the head coaching position at Hiram College for two reasons," stated Campbell. "First, having attended a Division III institution, I believe in the Division III model. The education, competition, and the balance between the two, is very beneficial for student-athletes.
"Secondly, STUNT is such an exciting sport for everyone involved. Not only is it a joy for me to coach, but the athletes and the fans will enjoy it as well. The head-to-head format is entertaining, and the routines necessary to compete will help advance the athletes' technique and skill."
During the 2017-18 academic year, Coach Campbell will be tasked with recruiting for the team, as well as leading opportunities for current students interested in both Cheer & STUNT. The Terriers will then open a competition schedule during the 2018-19 season.
"As head coach I will expect a lot of my athletes because I will give a lot back to them," remarked Campbell of her philosophy. "My personal motto, "challenge yourself", will be present in every practice and game. I will strive every day to create athletes who are prepared for not only competition, but for success in the post-graduate world as well."
