As classes start this week, the fall sports teams will open up their seasons on the road. Football, men's soccer, volleyball and both golf teams will be on the road throughout the week. Women's soccer will also start their season on the road, but will also have their home opener on Sunday.
The Terriers will start their season against nonconference foe Westminster (Pa.) on Saturday, September 3rd at 7 p.m. The Terriers' overall record against the Titans stands at 3-14-2, respectively.
To describe the last game Hiram faced Westminster as a gutwrencher is an understatement. Neither team scored in the first quarter. It was not until the second quarter when the Titans scored the first touchdown of the game. The Terriers fired back in the third with a 30-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to four. Both teams battled offensively in the fourth quarter, but the Titans outscored the Terriers 10-4 in the final 15 minutes. The Titans defeated the Terriers with a final score of 17-9.
Hiram will first travel to Thiel College (Pa.) to open their season on Thursday, September 1 at 7 p.m. The Terriers look to once again dominate the Tomcats like they did in their previous matchup last season, outscoring them 8-0.
The team will then head home to battle local rival Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, September 4 at 1:30 p.m. The Terriers will be looking for their first victory in program history against the Spartans, holding a 0-11 overall record. This will be the first time since 2011 that the two teams faced each other.
The Terriers will be competing at the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament, hosted by Penn State- Behrend. Their first game will be on Friday, September 2 against Baldwin Wallace at 7:30 p.m. The Terriers will then play on Saturday. Their opponent and game time will depend on the outcome of Friday's game and the Penn St.-Behrend/Houghton (N.Y.) game.
This year, the Yellow Jackets will be looking to get revenge against the Terriers. Hiram defeated Baldwin Wallace 3-1 in the second round of the same tournament last season. The Terriers were defeated by SUNY Geneseo during the first round of play.
The volleyball team will be playing in a tournament at La Roche College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Terriers will have two consecutive matches on Friday, September 2. The first match will be at 6:30 p.m. against Chatham (Pa.) and the second will be at 8:00 p.m. against Washington & Jefferson. On Saturday, Hiram will face conference rival Oberlin College at 10 a.m. and York (Pa.) at 1 p.m.
This will be the first time that Hiram will be battling Chatham and York in volleyball. However, the Terriers own a 9-6 overall record against Washington & Jefferson and a 31-10-1 against Oberlin.
Both the men's and women's golf teams will begin their seasons on Saturday and Sunday. The men's team will be participating in the Gatorade Fall Collegiate at Zoar Village Golf Club on Saturday and Zoar Golf Club on Sunday. The women's team will be competing in the Lynn Schweizer Invitational at Granville Golf Course on both days.
